Post First bike - PW50 or CRF50
Thinking of getting my 5 year old son his first bike for Christmas or his next birthday. Can't decide whether to go with the PW50 or CRF50

First considerations suggest that a CRF might be the better option given clutchless 3 speed, slightly beefier construction, etc. Can anyone suggest a reason why I should be giving the PW50 more thought or have experience with both?

Cheers

Steve

If your son is big enough for the CRF50, then it would be the way to go. The CRF50 is bigger than the PW50, it has gears, it has proper suspension.

I have a JR50, which is similar to the PW50. The JR50 has the advantage that it can be modified to unlock a lower gear (good for hilly areas), and it has the rear brake down at the foot where it's supposed to be.

If you have smooth flat areas to ride, the Pw50 would be ok. The JR and PW50 don't have proper suspension, it has no damping. The single speed in the Pw50 won't like hills.

You could always by a 2nd hand Jr50/PW50 and use it for a while to see if he likes riding and to get him into it on a nice light and small bike. Then sell it when he is ready for something bigger, the mini bikes hold their value extremely well so you shouldn't really lose much money when selling it again.

Thanks for the advice guys. I took my little boy around the local dealers and had him sit astride the bikes. Whilst I feel the CRF (or KTM) is a longer term prospect I think the smaller size/weight and lower power of the PW50 is better to start with even if its only a short term propspect. So I picked up a used one last weekend :)
