Dirt Track (Speedway) on a Supermoto
I felt particularly stupid on the weekend and decided to ride my supermoto on some dirt track, running road rubber and all. I was having a struggle for traction, so decided to watch some of the faster boys. There was 1 lunatic in particular that seemed to have a good handle on riding a bike sideways and using his body weight. His name was Gary McCoy, you may have heard of him...

You have to run 8-10psi and 2 rim-locks in the rear trials tyre to get it to work properly. Thats what there supposed to do. It looks like Nugee dirt-track to me.

Yep, it's Nudgee. It's cheap fun. $20 for a day license, $20 for the practice session. Practice was 1-4pm, there was 8 groups so we only got out for about 4 sessions of ~10mins each.

We had our own supermoto class so we didn't have to ride with the insane proper dirt trackers. We were rather slow, but we had little grip :)

Matt and I were on road track tyres with no tread. I put some horizontal bar grooves in the middle of my rear tyre with a tyre groover, but it didn't help much. Some guys were running wet weather track tyres which looked to be working better.

Trials tyres are the best thing to use on a Decomposed granite track such as nudgee. It would of been a slow run on those super-moto wheels i reckon. Well done for going out there on such a set-up though. Bet eveyone was watching yas"

Ps; The last 2 pics shows the track must of been dry and dusty. Did they use the water truck at all to keep it miost.

Yes they all thought we were going to die :)

Gary McCoy walked over and looked at my rear tyre with a funny look on his face - like wtf :)

Here is a better video, this is session 3. The track conditions were much better, the grip was more consistent. In the first session the far corner was like deep sand and the straights had slippery mud.

Around 2:58 you see my handlebars go out to the right as I lock the front braking into the turn (similar to Lorenzo at Sepang for all the motogp fans).

There is linked comments on the youtube video page with links to the exciting bits. I have copied them below...

0:00 Start
1:10 hear Paul coming down the outside on the straight
1:15 Paul in too deep runs very wide
1:30 Paul around the outside slipping around
2:58 lock my front brake into the corner, that was exciting :o
4:28 I can hear Glen's 2 stroke YZ250 coming
5:20 catch Brian
5:30 end of session before Glen gets a chance to pass me.

This was my 3rd session at Dirt Track at the Nudgee Speedway. I'm on a DRZ400E with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa road tyres, with no grip. Brian is on a DRZ400E with Distanza's, Paul is on an Aprilia SXV550 with wet style track tyres and Glen is on a YZ250 with proper dirt track tyres.

Ow!

At least someone got the photos of it!

The good thing about riding the supermoto class is that the lack of grip limits the speeds and potential for massive crashes like that. And all the crazy people are in the proper dirt track class. There were some really fast crazy girls out there too.
