Post Helmet cam thread
Had this saved from the other site so I thought I would wack it up!!!

Ok I thought I would do a post on ......Helmet cams .... Mounting..... Editing and Posting up.

feel free to add and comment.

I will put up what I know of hand held cams as well.

Now the quality you get from your camera is down to a few things, Sensor (cmos or CCD) Image resolution ie 640 x 480, 512 x 385 or 720 x 480, Frames per second IE 30 0r 15 and file type.

The higher the resolution the better video. The higher the frames per second the smoother the video. And the file type will determin how well the camera deals with the images it captures. More on this later...

here is a good web site for reseach as they are aussie and you get a good idea of price.
http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/self-contained

Go Pro
Cheap budget cam with suprising quality.
http://www.goprocamera.com/

Resolution
512X385 @ 30 frames per second
Takes pics as well.
they have a range of cams with different fields of view see web site

Good footage from what I have seen posted up on you tube and vimeo.

Tachyonic
http://www.tachyoninc.com/main.html
I have only seen what Jonsey has posted up and this cam also seems to give very good image quality for the price $150 us on the web site plus p&h

640 x 480 29 frames per second
only 50 deg field of view from what I can see

Vhold R

640 x 480 30 FPS
About $500
Dont know about this one
anyone care to comment??

Origan scientific ATK series

There are a few but I think (correct me if I am wrong) that the specs are all the same

640 x 480 30 frames per second
The video I have seen from this one seems good as well.

Vio POV1 and Vio POV 1.5

http://www.vio-pov.com/

these are the same cam but have different heads. Now the specs are the same.
as this is the cam I have got I will expand on it a bit.

720 x 480 30 frames per second.
AVI file format Cmos sensor.
Can take an 8 gig card and at maximum quality give about 340mins recording.
It takes 4 x aa batteries and when you install decent rechargables you get at least 4 hours record time.

Comes with a remote that aint worth shit and has many mounting options.
Is fully water proof to 1.5 m and is shock proof. trust me I have tested this
Here is an example:http://www.vimeo.com/3116266
The camera smacked the ground hard in that vid

This cam (aside from the new sony) has the best image quality.

It is a bitch when mounted on your helmet cause every time you stop you have to deal with your helmet being connected to your backpack. This is a bugger at first but you get used to it.

The mic gain is adjustable and I sugest going no higer than 3 as the noise cuts in and out. At 3 or below it works quite well. I have mounted the mic besides my mouth once which worked well until I remembered I had nothing interesting to say and didnt like the sound of my own voice!!
They are (again aside from the new sony) the most expensive cam. I got mine from the states when the $$ was worth something and I was out of pocket about $640. They are 1200 plus shipping in Aust. well worth it if you get really into it!
There is a 1.5m version on the website for $699 with mounting gear. Good for when the $$$ goes back up!

Sony
HXRMC.1

http://www.sony.ca/hdv/files/Brochures/ ... HXRMC1.pdf
The holy grail but not water shock proof
1080p recording but needs memory sticks not SD cards like every thing else.
Read up on the PDF I linked very very good image

Ver very expensive. Think TV broadcast stuff!

i had one for awhile and at the time it was released was most likely the best,(has been replaced by the vholdr hd contour should be able to get one from the states for under $500.00 aus delivered) which seems from the footage i have seen to be awesome...
back on the vholdr easy to use, footage reasonable and better than alot of others...sound was it's real let down the mic is shocking....
i have just bought another which all up for postage has cost me $190.00aus......
expect to get them a lot cheaper now that they have the new model which is the same price as this one was released for a couple of years ago......

well just got my new vholdr,no it's not the countour but i picked it up for $190.00aus delivered so i reckon that's cheap...
the old one i lost cost me the same as what they are now asking for a contour..
anyways it has a few things that are different from the one i had, like the battery clip is heaps better than the old one...
also a much better quality sd card came with it this time....
hoping the mic has been upgraded to the same as the contour becuase the old version suked serious bat....

so time will tell will post up some footage when i get a chance to use it.....

I've got a Oregon ATC-2k. 30 fps. 640x480 res. Sound is pretty good but I would dubb a soundtrack if I was going to upload any footage. Paid about $150.00 for 18 months to 2 yrs ago. Battery life is awesome, get the best part of a days riding/recording out of two decent batteries(energizers). I use 2gig memory cards in it, cheap as and get 55 mins to a card, although I notice the new ones use 4gig cards so I might try one of them. For its price its not too bad, the biggest trouble I've had is mounting it. I've had it on the side of my helmet and on my bike, both a bit too shaky so I'm about to get some double sided tape and smack it fair on the top of my helmet, should be better if it stays there. The other thing I've noticed is it tends to point down a little, so u have to test it's field of view when you mount it.
