Post drift x170
hi finally went for a decent ride to test out the cam it is great with the remote it works really well the screen is good to get a good angle but not much chop to view the video just to small. but I am having trouble with some settings it is like the cam can not adjust to the different light fast enough or something and even with the sound turned right down all you can hear is wind when doing some pace. The quality in this vid is not that flash as I stuffed up the settings in the editing program but if someone could give me some pointers that would be great.

hey chad

first up can you upload a raw clip?

you can use avidemux to shorten it : http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

just make sure you choose MP4 for the audio.

this will show the video as it comes from the cam

now for the audio

you need a wind sock for the mic

its a basic foam over the mic that stops the wind from overpowering the audio (Like what is happening with yours).

Dags has tips on how to do this but its not hard I will see if I can get a link from jaycar for ya.

This is what sorted mine

also turn the mic down to the minimum as well (If you can??)

to put a wind sock in you will have to pull the cam apart and cover the mic with a bit of foam and then reassemble. try it out and see if you need another level of foam.

one thing I found was that put the wind sock on mine (easy cause the mic i on the lead) and I taped over the top. over the mic and all. I did not expect it to work at all but it works fine!

In fact I think I need to go with 2 layers of foam and then tape.

perhaps you could just try some foam over the mic hole and tape over the top and then play with the level and see if you get decent sound?

its worth a try.

Its a known issue with these cams by the way!

thanks simon that is what I was going to try do you have any idea about it chopping and changing with the light or is that just it trying to compensate for different light levels and there is nothing I can do.

hmmm

i just reseached and the x170 is only SD not HD. (I thought it was)

now it seems to me to be flicking light to dark without you going from light to dark....

coud be an issue with the cam.

what does it look like from the raw footage off the cam?? IE not uploaded on vimeo. I doubt its a vimeo issue though!!.

you could do an isolation test by going to a well liht room film a set picture or something and then watch the footage and see if the light changes the same way. IE no move ment and No light changes.

If you se no flicking of the light as in that vid then try movement round the room BUT make sure the light is constand and see if the light on the footage changes.

If those tests show changes in light levels like your vids then you have a problem with your cam.

1st best tip

Try a new better SD card

second new fresh batteries

third check for firmware updates

4th Dags.

Simon

Chad I think the base x170 has a fairly basic exposure algorithim. In the overcast conditions the camera is "Hunting" for the right exposure nd you are getting the Light dark light dark issue.

The HD170 and the stealth (I Think) have the better proccessor and from reading the manuals they have the option of auto or manual exposure. maunal would solve this issue.

yours only has auto exposure.

I will PM Dags and see if there is a firmware update for these units.

The next thing is to wait (and wait and wait and wait) for a sunny day and then go for a ride and see how it goes.

BUT

two thngs again

GOOD SD CARDS kingston class 6 at least 10 is better.

These will get much more expensive soon as they are made in japan

decent batteries.

I dont think the above is the cause but worth trying

even with thos issue the vids look great so I would not get too stressed about it.
