Post VIO POV HD Helmet cam REVIEW by Simon
Take two............... (I started take one and deleted it weeks ago)

Dags has supplied me with a VIO POVHD at a great price. Thanks Dags mate. great support From http://www.getonitperformancesports.com/ yet again

Dags and I have been hanging out for this Cam for a long long while and Dags gave me a call to say Buddy, mate they are in!

Seeing as I had just stuffed my Gopro HD I thought Buggerit why not! (should have pressed Not)

Two weeks later (Aust Post YOU SUCK) It arrived

My happiness with the new toy soon went down the toilet with my breakfast..... The imager was wayyyy out of focus.

See in this test: http://www.vimeo.com/19950848

Watch in full screen and in HD only

Pull up the vid and pause it at any point and you will se the bike controls are in sharp focus but the left hand side is shit.

Called Dags and he got on to it. It looked like I would have to send this back to the states but I think they noticed how many views the TRA and My Vimeo page gets.... Didnt want me doing a shit can review.

Dags yet again came through with great support and today the new imager arrived.

This one is in very sharp focus.. NOW I am happy.

Well sort of. Vio are doing many firmware releases and improving things thank god.

Audio at first, SHIT Thats being kind.

Dags suggested setting the gain to automatic and this helped. I have also put a wind sock on and now all is great.

So now I have a cam with the audio sorted out. 1 x wind sock (foam and electrical tape) New imager and new firmware.

Picture quality. 720p Very sharp. Greens are not a "Vibrant" as the Go Pro or the Drift.

The Field of View is much better in 1080p and the fish eye in 720 is non existant.

This is supposed to be a Gopro and Drift Killer and at this stage it is not.

It chews through batteries. It takes AA batteries so spares are not a problem. The old vio would last 2 rides but now I am not sure we will get two hours...

I am worries about the imager. if it gets bumped and goes out of focus so easy that a worry. The Lense is bigger and if scratched will require replacement.

Plus: No big weight on the helmet. all accories are the same as my old Vio POV1

Crisp vids

many different options that are easy to set. (Unlike go pro..)

Here for comparison is the Gopro Hero HD filmed in 720p 30 frames per second
http://www.vimeo.com/17082527

This uploaded raw as were all other clips in this review. NO POST PRODUCTION WAS DONE from my end at all.

Only Vimeo's transcoding was applied.

Quick conclusions

This cam is double almost the cost of the drif and the Gopro cams.

Is it double the value, quality usablity, doulble the Video crispnes etc,

No. This was going to be a huge step up Cant see it yet myself.

If you are in the market for a helmet cam seriously Talk to Dags about a Drift or a Gorpo.

If you are an enthusist like my self, Let Vio get some firmware updates under their belts.

Note I have yet to get this thing out on the trails and see how it goes.

My old Vio took so much punisment and kept working, I hope the new unit will be the same Time will tell.

I will add to this once I have taken plenty of trail footage and then see how it goes.

Post Question
I want to put this out there

which is better image quality??????????? (I know they are not the same area lighting time of day etc) But both are Raw and in 1080p on Vimeo

Vio POV HD
http://www.vimeo.com/20465411

Or this

Go Pro HD
http://www.vimeo.com/9642685

I would like some feed back please. I am getting cross eyed looking at this too much

NOTE you will need a decent computer to view the 1080p Vids an older unit WILL struggle. (i will be filming in 720 in the long run)

I think vimeo will still be compressing those videos a little, because my gopro looks better than that.

I can give you ftp access to an area on this server if you want to add some real raw video files.

I also think you need to stick both cameras on at once and go for a ride, both filming exactly the same thing.

Sorry to be clear yes the raw footage vs the Vimeo footage.

the raw is much better. This goes for the vio and the go pro.

Vimeo and youtube have to compress I think. they could not hold and disply the raw as the files are huge.

Yes, we have the storage. We are on an unlimited plan. The forum has about 1GB of picture attachments. We are using 1.6GB total so far. I'll send you some details and you can go nuts :)
