yup just heard that on the comentary but could not find it in the regs from the site

sounds like the rules were pretty fluid there for a while

450 from 2012 is looks like it will stick though!

The question is: If KTM's are so good why aren't any riders riding the 450 all have gone for the big bores

You would think even the factory would slip a rider in on the 450 just to see how it went for future planning so obviously they don't have confidence in their product.

Another new reg was only two engine swapouts for the whole race - used to be unlimited I believe

KTM have the shits over the whole issue as I understand it

They have taken thier bat and ball and gone home.......

I would have thougt the 010 450exc would do as well if not better than the wrf and sherco????

so do you think the 450's are comaprative to the rstricted 690s or unrestricted?

I think they are close now but there is only 1 unrestriced 690 in the top ten.

I think if the 690's had no alloy choke in the inlet the wrf and the sherco would be waaaayyyyy back in the conditions

They do not have the power or speed of the 690 whether restricted or not - never will but they are lighter and so far have suited the conditions better. I can remember Dave Schwartz saying how he was pinning the 690 and hitting the base of dunes at 170+ kph last year. The 450 will never do that. The 690 has lost some topend power but gained low down grunt. The restrictor is just a 32mm air intake on the carby to stop it breathing so well. Do you really think the tech's at KTM haven't played with it for the last 12 months to get the ultimate power from it even with the restrictor on it? icon_biggrin

They invest millions in this race and a win is the only acceptable result

They did and that is why the rule was changed for the next two years - so they can develop the 450 engine to be more adept at rallye racing not enduros would be my guess.

Mud tyres? - no mate all on michy deserts etc, having grip problems due to the rain but not slowing them down much but this is why the 450's are with them so far IMO

so are ktm out or not????

reading this http://www.ktmusa.com/KTM-News.223.20.html?nodeID=106585&cHash=9d4b98175c

they are out for good never to return???

never say never. This was from halfway through last year though

A restricted 690 is different to a 450 tourqe will be much better for sure.

I understand that the topend will be stuffed but you are right in what you say the boffins will have made the best of a difficult situation

I still am not sure why they went 450cc (I know to slow them) but will it really???

450cc peaky power plenty of power and tourque for what we do too much in fact but add all the extras 30 40 KGs of gear water tools etc (guessing here)

Its not going to do 170kph over the dunes. And maybe thats the whole point, thats the crux of the matter. Isnt that what happend to Andy? very fast off?

The organisers no longer want 170kph+ over the dunes.

Im not sure thats the way why not restrict gearing? 1000cc max but geared max to 150kph

The mud tyres comment was about the cars and trucks

one type of tyre for the duration of the race and everyone is struggling. trucks sideways
most have sand tyres

There is an hour long segment on fox at about 9am and again at 4.30pm each day and half hour on sbs at 6pm I think. I watched it today and saw two cars slide through a corner and roll it on a mountain so I don't think anyone is on anything but desert tyres as most of it is gravel and rocks, muds would be cut to pieces in minutes.

in the comentary this arvo they said every one was struggling (the leader rolled) due to the fact that you could choose 1 tyre type for the event. so you choose for sand I would think or desert as you put it.

Not real suited to mud!!!

Thanks for the link. That will keep me busy tonight!
