Post COMPUTER QUESTION?
My computer would not power up last week at all....the light on the button came on ...but the computer would not start up.

Took it back to the shop where I purchased it....as its still under wty...and they rang me back telling me...all the internals are ok...it was caused by large amounts of dust between the RAM slots......now my question to all you computer people out there is ...can this really stop
your computer from starting up?......I think I have been ripped

The computer will do a memory check on start up. if this fails then it will not boot.

Dust will not conduct electricity normall but when slightly damp it will.

Ram these days is Very high speed and just a small issue and it fails.

so keep the dust away and you are good!

As Hori said a can of compressed air is a good way.

(I am a slack prick and turn the computer up side down and give it a bang.) but then again I can fix it if (and usually when) I F##K it.

AND I use it for a reason to upgrade.

Commpressed air in a can is best and cheap from Dick smith or jaycar

Normally this issue is related to power supply. Dust story sounds like bullshit and probly is!!! They would have pulled the side or top cover off your PC, pulled the ram out put it back in Called "reseating". They would have done this to all your cards one by one to elliminate the faulty connection that can cause start up fail. Re-seating solves the problem 9 times out of ten, if that doesnt work it's normally power supply or processor chip fryed BangHead . Computers suck arse when they don't work BangHead BangHead BangHead

They might have run the dust buster over the processor fan and cards including the ram chips. I would charge $60 to come out and do this within 30km. At the shop 30 bucks or nothing. New power supply installed will cost you around $50 to $90 for a standard setup plus install around $45 to $60.

The rule with static is keep the PC plugged in to the wall with the power switch off. Always touch the case before touhin RAM and motherboard and processor exctra. Clean your hands before touching stuff also is a good tip, you can get wrist bands that connect you to an earth but I never used one.

15 years touchin PC's and never fryed a chip always used this method!!

You are just no so good at F##KING stuff as Hori and I are. (we are just very good at F##KING stuff )

You know those really dry days when you walk on the carpet and get a shock by touching the door frame? These are a very very bad time for electronics

Your methods make sense but Tex Rangers problem is more and more an issue as ram is getting faster and faster. its not the old 266 mhz crap.

The ram now days is seriously fast and can be affected by anything. touchy as F##K.

so what the shop says now days is actually likely. reseating ram is quite often a way of fault finding a computer. and If you find the ram (or in the case Dont fine the ram as its up to its case in dust) in dust and when the dust gets moist the computer will go though the check sum and go...

No sorry I aint starting today.

Give it a good clean and reseat every thing and try again and its happy

BUT as you say Dodgy computer reseller wants to pass the buck and whacks a second hand PSU in and its all good then....

I have had to gut 3 servers at work and strip them back and clean them out and start them up again.

(in 10 mins cause they run quite important system) but this just makes it all interesting.

Post Re: COMPUTER QUESTION?
standard memory these days is 1600mhz

this is just stupid fast.

And this is why I say its touchy any dust around the ram and it will have a bad day.

Best to keep your computer clean.

Any computer built within the last two years will have this ram DDR3 ram.

Older computers will have DDR2 which will be 667 MHZ much much slower and more resiliant.

some of this is making sense now......I had to take it back to the computer shop where I got it as it was under wty...so you are never sure....but seeing that dust is not wty...it cost me a standard charge of $129.00 :protest

they did try to upsell me everything else from a care package to total clean out.....all this was going to come to $480.00...so I just picked it up....but what is strange is now when I start the computer up and makes a load beeping noise I have never herd before ..even when new icon_scratch

any suggestions
