Post GoPro HERO HD 720p vs 1080p mode - and youtube vs vimeo
I finally managed to get some spare time yesterday, so lined up a ride with my mate Dave, just a gentle ride around Mt Mee. I thought I'd put the camera in 1080p mode and give it a try, as I usually use 720p mode.

So, here is a comparison of 720p mode and 1080p mode on the GoPro Hero HD. This is the same track both times. If you click through to youtube you can watch them in their full 720 and 1080p modes, although youtube has still compressed them, so the quality isn't as good as the file I uploaded.

720p mode, riding with Shane-O and McTainsh on WR450's. The camera is on top of my helmet in this video. It was pretty dusty that day.

1080p mode, riding with a mate on a DRZ400. The camera is on the side of my helmet in this video. It was a bit wet yesterday.

you know that the Gopro has only got a 720p imager and upscales to 1080 Wes?

there is only one cam that has a 1080 imager out there and unfortunatly the lenses are not that strong...

I will be interested in the Vimeo comparison. You should post links up as embeded Vids are not going to show the full potential of the vid.

Thats TWO busted cams.

Look you loan out the cam with the Full knowledge that it can and probably will get roosted so no big issue.

Now I miss my bloody Go Pro Wes.

What is your opinion on 1080P on you tube Wes?? my thoughts... 1 waste of time... to slow to load.

2 I def think it suffers being an upscaled 720p image.
The Vio looks average in 720p mode but in 1080p looks fantastic... well "Looked"...

The Go pro looks fantastic in 720p (better than the Vio in 720 by far) but in 1080 if you stop the vid its harsh.

The Gopro is still in my books the best helmet camout there as the audio is the best and really we only use 720 day to day.

(and Wes you me and dags care that much about quality)

slippery toward the end there Wes??

funny the quality under the forest at the end was every good out of the dust.

I am watching on a high quality 1080p screen as well.

(it makes a difference...)

Cant judge a vid at work as the work laptop screen is so poor

Yeah, at the end the front went into a slippery rut and went left, then bit in and shot me off to the right :)

The 1080p looks very clear straight off the cam. Youtube has compressed it a lot. If I put the memory card straight into my playstation, and watch it on the 46" LCD TV, then it looks great.

I think I prefer the narrow angle of the 1080p setting, it gives you a better idea of how far away people are. Although I think the footage looks more jiggly in the 1080p than the 720p mode. The constant switching from light to shadows on that track gives helmet cams a hard time.

I was thinking that as well. jiggly at 1080p.
Its funny that its narrow on the go pro at 1080p but wider on the vio as its using all of the sensor. Its higher as well so you get a better VOF. Thats the shit of 1080p in genaral as you need a bigger computer to edit and it takes longer to upload and then every one watching will struggle to watch if they dont have a decent connection and a resonable computer.

In a few years time (if the libs dont screw it up AGAIN) we may be ok

The last Firmware upgrade I had for the vio improved the contrast so the shadows to full sun actually worked really well. but from factory it was shocking... That was one great thing the vio has is constant Firware updates. (plus the fact they make some differnece when you load them)

Yep, looks grainy, the same as 1080p youtube.

I have created 4 screenshots;
1 - straight off the camera
2 - edited and re-encoded using Windows Live Movie Maker in 1080p mode (you'll note this step zoomed the image slightly)
3 - youtube in 1080p full screen
4 - vimeo in 1080p full screen.

Vimeo and youtube are both quite grainy and compressed.

They can be downloaded here for comparison - http://www.trailrideraustralia.com/images/goprotest/
Download them to a folder by themselves, then view with a program like Window picture viewer which will let you flick between the different pictures quickly.

Looking hard at both Youtube and Vimeo they are both compressed but they seem equal.

Just slightly different frames, perhaps 1 frame out?

But Both youtube and vimeo are going to compress, they cannot afford the drive space. Or the bandwdth.

I suspect the served vid is very low bandwidth compared to what comes from the cam.

If you were to download the vid from vimeo (if that were enabled) you should get your original as uploaded file.

But what you view in the window is nothing like that. Both sites cannot upload 616megs for every HD view that you download.

its probably somewhere around 200meg and they have developed their own compression that is fairly state of the art.

still you look at the image and pasue it. then look at your raw footage and pause it. they will be miles apart.

Here is a comparison that I have made of Dave.
http://www.trailrideraustralia.com/imag ... arison.png

Youtube and vimeo look pretty similar.

I also used a program called Jdownloader to download the youtube and vimeo stream files. This is what I get;
1 - GoPro raw - 15200kbps bit rate, 400MB file size.
2 - WLMM edit - 24192kbps bit rate, 616MB file size.
3 - youtube mp4 - 7536kbps bit rate, 193MB file size.
4 - vimeo mp4 - 4498kbps bit rate, 118MB file size.

So there you go Simon, that's how the actual streaming video file size compares.

Wes

you have too much Time

I thought I had too much

But there you go raw is 400 youtube is 193 (say half) and Vimeo is 118 so a bit over a quarter.

The only issue I have is I am not sure that the vimeo is showing a 1080 vid.

I will have to go back to another that I have upgraded as it had a larger window after upgrading.

Let me check. (also it took vimeo 2 hours to upgrade the video the three times it was done and so far this has not happened).

so i am a bit sus on the Vimeo side. perhaps its a sunday and the upgrading needs manual intervention???? I will investigate
